A life behind bars

For twelve long years, I woke up every morning in cold cell B-17.

At one point, he had tried to fight back: writing letters, contacting lawyers, and pleading with anyone who would listen to believe in his innocence.

But no one paid attention. Little by little, he stopped resisting. He surrendered to the silence, the walls, and the fate that awaited him.

The only thing that gave him strength was his dog: a German shepherd he had found as a shivering puppy in an alley.

The only thing that gave him strength was his dog: a German shepherd he had found as a trembling puppy in an alleyway. She became his family, his companion, the only being he trusted. In the world, he had no one else left.

When the prison warden arrived with the paper asking about his last wish, the guards expected the usual answers: food, a cigarette, maybe a prayer. But the man spoke softly:

The German shepherd entered on a leash. For an instant, the world seemed to hold its breath. Then, upon seeing her master, the dog broke free and ran toward him.

In a flash, she knocked him down, leaping into his arms as if to make up for twelve years of separation in a single moment. He fell, but for the first time in years, he didn’t feel the weight of the chains or the chill of the stone. He felt warmth.

He held her tightly, burying his face in her thick fur. The tears he had held back for so long poured out, without shame.
He wept, torn and broken, while the dog whimpered softly, pressing even closer, as if she too knew their time together was running out.

— “You’re my girl… my faithful companion…” he whispered, his trembling hands stroking her back again and again. “What will you do without me?
